The Fund for the Public Interest
123 Hawley St Suite 3
Northampton, MA 01060
Company Description: Fund for the Public Interest is a national, nonprofit organization that runs campaigns for America’s leading environmental and public interest organizations. We launched the Fund in 1982 to help find ways to engage people on the most pressing problems of our day and turn that support into solutions. And now we run the nation’s largest and most effective canvassing and telephone membership operation. Our canvassers and callers talk to people one-on-one and through those interactions help make thousands, sometimes millions of people’s voices heard, through petitions, emails, small donations and meetings. That’s people power, and that’s what it takes to make a difference for the environment, for our democracy, and more. |

Description: | Why we canvass
Every day, people are bombarded with information — from television, the internet, the radio and more. But if you want to get people to engage on issues that matter, there is nothing as powerful as a face-to-face conversation. It’s an opportunity to educate people on important issues, and give them the chance to take action. And when thousands of informed people make their voices heard, that’s the kind of people power that makes real change happen.
By canvassing, we can meet people where they're at — at their doors or on the street. Most people already agree with us on the issues, whether it's global warming, overuse of antibiotics on factory farms, or getting big money out of politics. And many more will agree with us once they've been educated about the problem and the solution. But unless we reach out and talk to people, they might not have the opportunity to learn about these important issues and take action for a cause they believe in.
When a canvasser gets someone to sign up or donate to a campaign, it means that person has put his or her name or money on the line for what we’re working for. And as more and more people do that for an organization, it builds the power of that group, and gives them resources they need to be effective for the long term.
So if you want to help make positive change, help us build the people power it takes to win changes for our environment, our democracy and more.
What does a canvasser do?
As a canvasser with the Fund, you’ll work out of a campaign office in one of dozens of cities across the country. You’ll go out into communities, knock on doors and talk to people about the issues. You’ll build people power, raise awareness, and raise money for the organizations we work with.
What does a field manager do?
In addition to canvassing every day, field managers are more involved in recruiting, motivating and training their fellow canvassers to hit our goals. They also have additional responsibilities to set performance goals, map out canvassing territories, keep good financial records, and help implement the non-canvassing aspects of the campaign (e.g. media, coalition-building, petitioning). |
