Amherst College invites applications for the Landscape and Grounds Group Leader position. The Landscape and Grounds Group Leader is a full-time, year round position, job group and level AO-4. The Landscape and Grounds Group Leaderprovides leadershipand supervision to a team of caretakers, grounds staff, student workers and others assigned to maintain the College Athletic Facilities and campus grounds. The Group Leader performs activities related to all aspects of grounds maintenance including, but not limited to, the preparation of the fields (including artificial turf fields and the hockey rink), facilities and equipment for athletic activities; and performs custodial services in the ice rink facility. The position acts as the primary contact with the Athletics Department for day to day customer service requests that do not require Supervisor of Landscape and Grounds review.

Work schedule: The position is designated as providing essential services and will be required to report to work, or remain on duty even when the College is closed. Our work is central to student life and their needs occur at a variety of times throughout the day, week, and year and in such, a flexible schedule with extended shift times is required. The work schedule varies and corresponds to the College's operational needs.

Key Responsibilities

Labor Support
• Provide labor support in all areas of landscape and grounds maintenance including, but not limited to, athletic facilities (artificial and natural fields, ice rink, track, tennis courts, Cage, gym, bleachers and storage areas) roads, walks, lawns, trees, shrubs, etc.
• General duties include artificial turf maintenance, mowing lawns, weeding, trimming trees, raking/blowing leaves, sweeping, and snow and ice removal
• Lead and participate in the set-up, support and clean up for Sporting Events
• Custodial duties include cleaning and sanitizing restroom and shower facilities, and daily maintenance and re-supplying of dispensers, and general office and public area cleaning including dusting, vacuuming, trash removal and recycling
• Operate trucks, saws, lawn-mowers, tractors with various attachments, utility vehicles and other equipment
• Maintain in good working order all athletic tools and equipment
• Perform minor maintenance service and routine inspections of all equipment, tools, and vehicles, ensuring all safety procedures are followed

Organizational Support
• Assist the Supervisor of Landscape and Grounds in providing leadership in all aspects of the operation and maintenance of all athletic facilities
• Organize, plan, and implement work schedules
• Manage supplies and equipment inventory, and make recommendations for new and annual purchases
• Act as the primary point of communication between Facilities and the Athletics Department for day to day activities
• Supervise the athletic grounds caretakers

Project Work
• Assist with general projects including setting-up furnishings and equipment, moving offices, loading and unloading trucks, and setup for special functions including Reunion, Commencement and Parent Weekend

QUALIFICATIONS

Required
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• A valid driver's license and successful credentialing in order to operate college vehicles
• Commercial Pesticide License, MA Hoisting License and DOT Card or the ability to obtain within 3 months
• 2 - 5 years of related experience
• Ability to use or learn Bacharach gas monitor to record CO in the Rink
• Working knowledge of rules and regulations of sports activities as relates to preparation of facilities, i.e. line marking, turf management, setting up of athletic equipment, etc.
• Strong verbal and written communication, customer service, and time-management skills
• Must have basic familiarity with computer usage, including email and internet
• Some overtime, weekend and occasional shift change is required
• Commitment to diversity and inclusiveness
• Successful completion of pre-employment physical and lift test
• CORI check

Environmental and Physical Demands
• Frequent exposure to outdoor elements, fluctuations in temperature and humidity, wet, icy, slippery and uneven conditions

• Exposure to dust, odors, noise, fumes, grease, oil, and vibrations (from equipment use)
• Exposure to hazardous materials such as fertilizer, pesticides, cleaning, snow and ice removal products
• Ability to lift and carry up to 60 pounds
• Repetitive motions - hands/arms/fingers/wrists/feet
• Frequent walking, bending, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, lifting
