The Managing Editor will • acquire and edit one or more feature articles per issue • help review and evaluate submissions to the magazine • help coordinate special editorial projects • coordinate Orion’s production and design process • oversee the editorial budget • acquire and edit two or more departments • and provide support to Orion’s senior-level staff. The Managing Editor will also supervise all staff members providing editorial and/or production support, and will therefore be skilled in managerial competencies, including self-observation, self-management, interpersonal awareness, attention to communication, personal credibility, empowerment of others, and providing motivational support. Requirements: The person who is hired for this job will have track records in both acquisition of editorial material consistent with the content that Orion publishes, in staff supervision and staff management, and familiarity with magazine production. The Managing Editor will share our belief in the power of good writing and will have a solid grounding in environmental thinking. They will have a deep interest in and genuine familiarity with Orion’s core subjects. They will have enthusiasm for both print and digital media, will take direction easily, and will also have the ability to independently take projects from start to finish. They will be highly organized, flexible, and skilled at convening conversations that prioritize others’ ideas and creative contributions, and will take joy in helping others succeed.
