The mission for The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, a non-profit organization in Amherst, MA, is to inspire a love of art and reading in through picture books. The Carle collects, preserves, presents, and celebrates picture books and picture book illustrations from around the world. In addition to underscoring the cultural, historical, and artistic significance of picture books and their art form, The Carle offers educational programs that provide a foundation for arts integration and literacy. Eric and Barbara Carle founded the Museum in November 2002. Eric Carle is the renowned author and illustrator of more than 70 books, including the 1969 classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Since opening, the 40,000 square-foot facility has served more than half a million visitors, including 30,000 schoolchildren. Its extensive resources include a collection of more than 10,000 picture book illustrations, three art galleries, an art studio, a theater, picture book and scholarly libraries, and educational programs for families, scholars, educators, and schoolchildren.

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst is seeking an outgoing friendly individual to create a positive experience for Museum guests serving as both Guest Services Staff with occasional shifts in the Shop as a Bookseller. Guest Services Staff work at Admissions, within the Galleries and the Reading Library. Duties include sale of daily Museum admission, advance program tickets, and memberships; Gallery security; maintenance of the Reading Library by shelving books and leading Storytime. Booksellers support the Museum’s mission of inspiring a love of art and reading through picture books by connecting patrons young and old with books, art supplies and toys from our world renowned curated collection; Booksellers also receive and restock inventory.
The ideal candidate for this position will be committed to engaging with patrons and providing outstanding customer service which includes sharing their knowledge of picture books, responding to patron concerns and questions, resolving general complaints from guests and members on site, and efficient, accurate cashiering. In order to provide excellent service, Staff will stay abreast of current and upcoming exhibitions, films, educational programs, and marketing campaigns.
Reporting to the Guest Services Coordinator the position requires a team oriented person who is capable of multi-tasking; should have previous experience working with the public, an interest in Museum work is preferred. Candidates must be able to list boxes of up to 25 lbs. Approx. 6-14 hours per week, regular Guest Services shifts on Sundays and the occasional Saturday or other weekday in the Shop as a Bookseller.
