Description:
The Town of Amherst Community Participation Officers are seeking a dynamic civic-minded individual to help engage with the Amherst Community. The primary role of an Amherst Ambassador is to: support community engagement and create new avenues for community engagement with Town initiatives, connect community members with Town resources, and serve as an information point for residents. An Amherst Ambassador will work in assigned locations and routes across Town (Town Hall, Conservation Areas, Parks, Village hubs, and Community gathering spaces) to engage residents with targeted messaging in a professional and friendly manner though opportunities including: staffing the Town Manager phone line in Town Hall, tabling at various events, door-to-door outreach, and occasional specified walking shifts. An Amherst Ambassador will be able to connect residents with relevant Town resources that fit their needs and answer questions about Town events and initiatives. An Ambassador is the positive, friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable link between the Town of Amherst and community members and seasonal visitors.
Requirements:
- Comfortable communicating clearly both verbally and written; possess strong interpersonal skills
- Comfortable speaking with the general public about Town initiatives (i.e. capital building projects, CRESS, DEI, and changes to public safety staffing levels)
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn, basic Town government processes and use technology (iPad to teach people how to navigate around the amherstma.gov website and “Engage Amherst” webpages and other Town digital services)
- Must be highly adaptable and flexible to change
- Must be available and flexible to pick up and maintain a minimum number of weekly shifts, including some weekend work
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, highly collaborative environment
- Must be comfortable working with a partner and/or team
- Able to maintain a friendly and professional demeanor when navigating challenging situations
- Have the ability to work in varying weather conditions (such as heat, cold, and navigate various surfaces such as pavement, bricks, sand, decking, stairs, ramps, etc.) for the duration of a shift
- Must engage respectfully with diverse cultures and communities
- Possess attention to detail
