Water Department Laborer

Department of Public Works - Water Division

FLSA – Non-Exempt

DPW Association - Level:  PW 1

Job Summary

Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, and maintenance of facilities.

Major Duties

  • Assists in excavation work by digging manually and backfilling; uses shovel and wheelbarrow.
  • Carries heavy material (sand, stone, tools) and may assist Mason, mechanic, or other skilled laborer. Under specific directions, may assist in laying pipe and in resurfacing (e.g., patching berm).
  • Shovels snow and removes ice; May assist in spreading salt and sand on streets, sidewalks, pavements, and highways in the town.
  • Performs miscellaneous painting, seeding, and loaming.
  • May assist in clean?up operations of public property (e.g., raking leaves and ball fields, filling sandboxes and sand containers, sweeping streets and sidewalks, mowing lawns, etc.).
  • Performs routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment; Refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor; cleans equipment; Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking equipment and tools after use.
  • Drives pickup trucks in the loading, hauling and unloading of various equipment, gravel and sand; Plows snow using a 4-wheel drive pickup on public ways and parking lots.
  • Performs required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, and laying and backfilling.
  • Operates a variety of power construction and maintenance equipment used in the water, sewer and street department.
  • Performs janitorial duties at the D.P.W. facility, including cleaning restrooms, sweeping, vacuuming and dusting, and painting.
  • Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned; May be assigned to other divisions within the department as necessary.

 

 

Minimum Qualifications

High School degree or equivalent OR any equivalent combination of education and experience demonstrating ability to perform the above duties.

  • Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License.
  • Some knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in maintenance, construction and repair activities; and skill in operation of some of the listed tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time; ability to work safely.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
