Minimum Qualifications
High School degree or equivalent PLUS four (4) years’ experience in the use of light equipment, with two (2) of those years related to utility or street systems; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Valid State Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with tanker and airbrake endorsements OR ability to obtain License within one year of hire;
- Valid Massachusetts 2A (minimum) Hoisting Engineer’s License or ability to obtain License within one year of hire;
- Certification in the FEMA National Incident Management System ICS 100/NIMS 700 and OSHA 10-hour Certification or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
- Working knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in street and utility maintenance and construction work; Working knowledge of light-equipment operating principles; Working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to equipment operations; Ability to observe proper safety precautions with equipment that requires a high degree of precision and where misuse could result in personal injury or considerable damage to equipment and the public.
- Ability to use automatic plotters and cutters.
- Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
- Ability to work from construction specifications or blueprints;
- Ability to classify soils and competently perform on excavation sites.
- Ability to perform heavy manual tasks under varying weather conditions;
- Ability to drive and operate a variety of equipment under varying conditions;
- Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors and the public.
- Ability to perform basic computer tasks.
Tools and Equipment Used
Motorized vehicles and equipment, loader, grader, including back-hoe, dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, jetter truck, street roller, manlift, tamper, plate compactor, saws, pumps, aeroil propane kettle, compressors, sanders, generators, common hand and power tools, shovels, wrenches, detection devices, mobile radio, phone, ditch witch. Ability to use computer and related equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
