FLSA – Non-Exempt

Part-time, Seasonal – Level 1, Step 9

JOB SUMMARY: The Lifeguard/Swim Instructor is responsible for teaching various levels of swimming to children and adults, and for the supervision of the participants in their designated learning groups. Responsible for enforcing pool rules and regulations to ensure the safety and supervision of all swimmers, participants, equipment, and the overall facility. Heavily involved with the general public, and will assist in many facets of overall pool operation. 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Works under the supervision of the Pool Manager and Aquatics Program Coordinator.

  SUPERVISION GIVEN: Not responsible for supervising employees or volunteers.

MAJOR DUTIES:

  • Teaches and/or assists with swim lessons; develops lesson plans.
  • Ensures the safety and supervision of participants, equipment and facility by enforcing pool and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Performs daily check of safety equipment to ensure it is in the correct place and in good working order.
  • Assists with regularly scheduled cleaning of pool area, locker rooms, and surrounding areas.
  • Provides courteous, professional assistance to the public.
  • Assists with special events as needed.
  • Attends mandatory staff meeting and in-service trainings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 15 years of age or older
  • Red Cross (or equivalent) certification in: -Lifeguard Training, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, and -First Aid.
  • Must successfully pass the Town’s water safety skill test;

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • WSI certification
  • Previous experience working at a pool or beach
  • Previous experience teaching swimming lessons

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must successfully pass Criminal Offender Registry Information (CORI) and Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) background checks
  • Must wear designated staff uniform

Physical Requirements:

This position is required to stand or sit, talk and hear for extended periods; is frequently required to walk, twist, turn, push, pull, swim; uses hands to manipulate, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reaches with hands and arms, lifts, push and pull, twists, turns, stoops and bends; required to swim; specific vision abilities required include close and medium distance vision, color and peripheral vision and depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; may occasionally lift or move up  to 160 lbs. in the water; must be able to hear normal sounds, distinguish sound as voice patterns. This position is required on to lift and use pool equipment requiring strength, endurance and coordination.

Job Environment:

Work is generally performed in outside or inside pool areas, requiring exposure to weather conditions, indoor and outdoor pool conditions; noise levels are moderate to loud.  Work area is wet. Operates pool equipment, occasionally computers, telephone, infrequently copiers, facsimile machines, and other standard office equipment. Makes regular contacts with the general public, parents, participants, children and other individuals or community groups. Regularly discusses, directs, and teaches swim instructions and pool safety. Most contacts involve an information exchange dialogue, providing instruction, and direction to pool users and swim class participants.
