Spring Volleyball Sports Instructor
Recreation Department
FLSA – Non-Exempt
Part-time, Seasonal – Level 7
Hourly rate:  $23.97 per hour – 6 hours per week

POSITION OVERVIEW:
Coordinates and instructs Amherst Recreation Youth Volleyball. Ensures a safe, positive, and inclusive environment while supporting skill development and teamwork. Attends weekday practices and games. Evening availability required, as dictated by the program schedule.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general direction of the Amherst Recreation Sports Director. Exercises judgement in performing duties.

SUPERVISION GIVEN: Supervises participants of Amherst Recreation Youth Volleyball. May assist in coordinating volunteers.

GENERAL DUTIES:

  • Coordinates and instructs Amherst Recreation Youth Volleyball, ensuring participant safety and enforcing program rules and sportsmanship
  • Implements age-appropriate volleyball drills and skill development activities in practice
  • Coaches volleyball games
  • Assists with setup, breakdown, and maintenance of equipment and facilities
  • Communicates with participants, families, and staff in a professional and appropriate manner; Responds to public inquiries regarding volleyball programming
  • Alerts Amherst Recreation staff of any incidents or issues of concern, and communicates program-related information as appropriate
  • Supports the coordination of volunteers as required
  • Performs related duties as necessary

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Knowledge of volleyball rules and fundamentals
  • Ability to effectively instruct volleyball fundamentals
  • Experience coaching and/or playing volleyball
  • Experience working with youth; Ability to manage groups of youth in an active setting
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; Ability to work respectfully with diverse populations
  • Strong organizational skills
  • CPR/First Aid certification, or willingness to obtain upon hire
  • Availability to work evenings, as required by the program schedule

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to stand, walk, run, and actively participate in volleyball activities for extended periods. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and assist with equipment setup.   Reasonable accommodations may be made to assist individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions of the job. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed in gymnasium and recreational facility settings.  Noise levels are moderate to loud. Uses equipment and tools associated with sports instruction and other fields of instruction.
