JOB DESCRIPTION

The Global Risk Manager and Health & Safety Officer will be responsible for overseeing Risk Management and Health & Safety for all CIS Abroad programs around the world. They will work with the International Operations Team and the Faculty Led Programs Teams to ensure high quality program delivery that exceeds the expectations of the field of International Education when it comes to Risk Management. The successful candidate will be able to work effectively as a member of a team, provide direction, delegate, and will possess strong organizational skills. This position reports to the Vice President of International Operations.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

--Program Development & Continuous Risk Assessment

o Liaise with Vice President of International Operations on program development; ensure that CIS Abroad’s Health & Safety requirements are met when programs are being developed
o Liaise with Director of Custom Program Operations when there is interest in a new program to ensure that participant/program Health & Safety needs can be met; advise on where CIS should or should not be operating
o Monitor news, security reports, CDC updates, State Department Warnings, and OSAC briefings to determine if changes in security situations will require changes to CIS Abroad delivery, including faculty-led programs
o Develop and maintain guidelines for faculty-led programs that address best practices for program development including accommodation choice, transportation vendor choice, and local staff employment
o Ensure that site-specific Crisis & Emergency Response and Risk Management are updated regularly; if there are Risk or Health & Safety concerns on particular programs, work to resolve current issues, and seek permanent solutions

--Pre-Departure Advising

o Assist in creating and maintaining the Health & Safety portions of the online pre-departure information for each CIS Abroad program
o Ensure that any flags that are raised when participants information is reviewed are thoroughly checked and that systems are in place to adequately mitigate risk, and to prepare students and staff for the challenges that may arise on-site
o Ensure that lists of programs that are accessible for students with varying abilities are kept up to date
o Provide personalized attention for parents and applicants who need extra support to prepare for experiences abroad

--Health and Safety Communication

o Work with staff, participants and parents on elevated issues of concern related to health & safety
o Streamline communication by being the go to person for Health & Safety issues - internally and for partners
o Work with insurance when situations arise that require action to be taken
o Communicate with all necessary parties when evaluating a student’s fitness to continue on a program

--Customer Service & Incident Response

o Work with on-site staff to resolve on-site participant issues as quickly as possible
o Serve as back up CIS Abroad staff member responsible for communication with parents and US universities for on-site participant issues
o Carefully oversee the on-site response to emergencies and ensure that protocol is being followed, including documentation and communication procedures
o Maintain systems for incident reporting and analyze incident data
o Participate in the CIS Abroad Emergency Phone rotation, and serve as a go-to person when other staff on the Emergency Phone have questions and concerns

--CIS Abroad Policy Development & Staff Training

o Review all Health & Safety policies annually to ensure that best practices are being followed
o Conduct regular training of staff to ensure that current best practices are known and followed; when policy is not being followed, help to coach staff to bring about change
o Conduct periodic training for Site Directors (SDs) in region
o Conduct check-ins with all SDs in region twice annually to review Health & Safety in the region
o Conduct annual Health & Safety training review for all new Onsite Program Coordinators (OPCs)
o Develop new systems to assist students with special accommodation requests
o Develop information to help prepare participants for mental health challenges on-site

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

o Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of three years of professional experience
o Previous international experience and demonstrated passion for international education
o International travel experience
o Experience being on an emergency phone
o Experience in crisis and emergency response
o Proven customer service skills
o Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
o Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
o Demonstrated success in a fast-paced office environment
o Excellent organizational skills
o Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, PDF; Google Suite a plus

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

o Master’s degree preferred
o Experience reviewing and drafting risk management and mitigation policy
o Desire to grow within the organization
o Previous experience leading projects
o Love of dogs
o Great sense of humor

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

o Ability to lift or maneuver up to 50 pounds
o Ability to continuously stand or walk
o Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs, and lift frequently
