Position Purpose:
Assists in the administration and supervision of the Summer Day Camps in compliance with State and federal regulations. Assists with training and supervising staff. Evaluates performance of assigned staff. Assists with program development; parents’ communications; instruction and care of children, and innovation of methods. Serves as a resource for identifying instructional materials, curricula, and methodologies. Performs related work as required.

Essential Functions:

• Assists in the administration and supervision of the summer camps in compliance with state and federal regulations.

• Assists the Director with staff and program development; parents’ communication; innovation of methods and approaches to instruction and care.

• Serves as resource for identifying instructional materials, curricula, and methodologies.

• Serves as the communication liaison between camp counselors, Director, Parents and Facilities.

• Assists with recruiting, hiring, and training of summer camp staff.

• Prepares weekly staff schedules; collect and applies staff availability data during summer session. Monitors staff attendance logs and evaluates performance in accordance with state policies.

• Observes and helps manage volunteer teams for July 4th event for the Recreation Department.

• Conducts safety inspections of school facility and communicates recommendations.

• Assists Camp director in pre-camp organization, i.e., material and supply ordering, organizing group rosters, ePACT information, parent communications etc.

• Delegates program planning tasks to group leaders.

• Assists with organizing field trips. Performs administrative tasks for event planning including locating and inviting guest speakers and performers; gathering data on facilities, costs, and transportation and obtaining permission slips.

• Prepares and maintains contact lists and contacts substitutes. Acts as substitute in camp programs where needed.

• Participates in and assists with facilitation of leadership team meetings, conferences, in-service training programs, and staff meetings.

• Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.


Minimum Required Qualifications:

Education, Training and Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree in Child Development or related field, plus two years of experience working with children from K to grade six or any equivalent combination of related education and experience is required. Must have CPR and First Aid Certification. Must have valid Massachusetts Drivers’ license or ability to obtain transportation to facilities. Must be able to successfully pass SORI, CORI and Juvenile CORI check.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge. Knowledge of basic project management techniques. Knowledge of state and federal regulations. Basic math skills and knowledge to prepare payroll data. Knowledge to analyze and generate reports. Basic knowledge of local public health laws and regulations. Knowledge to maintain certifications. Thorough working knowledge of child development. Knowledge to perform administrative duties.

Ability. Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, Ability to communicate in second language is helpful. Ability to be understood. Ability to interact and communicate with people of diverse cultures and backgrounds. Ability to schedule and coordinate multiple programs. Ability to initiate innovative educational materials in an engaging way. Ability to work with large numbers of children, parents, instructors, facility maintenance professionals, and the general public. Ability to communicate respectfully and diplomatically with children, parents, volunteers, instructors, the general public, other staff and municipal departments. Ability to organize programs, work flexible schedules, and plan field trips. Ability to obtain transportation or to drive to various locations. Ability to manage research and administrative tasks effectively and efficiently. Ability to complete tasks on time. Ability to use telephone and other standard office equipment. Ability to successfully complete and retain CPR, First Aid certifications and other state, federal, or locally required training. Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Skill. Proficient organizational skills. Effective communicator and collaborator. Skill as a resource to instructors, teachers, and volunteers. Competent in computer operations and computer software such as MS Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Skill to assist in interviews, hiring, supervise, and evaluate volunteers. Skill to perform administrative tasks. Skill in applying knowledge of motivation and knowledge of learning styles for children from K-6 grades. Skill to type and operate telephone, computer, and other standard office equipment. Skill in curricula development. Skill to perform tasks of event planner. Skill to assist as camp staff substitute.
